Who at Modern Wedding Photography will photograph my wedding?

Denise Chastain, will be your principal photographer.

I photograph all of our weddings here at Modern Wedding Photography.  I arrive at your “getting ready” location with a huge smile on my face honored and thrilled  to photograph your wedding day. I also work with a delightful second photographer/assistant.

I hope by the end of your wedding day we feel like old friends and kindred spirits.

"I am always present and NEVER intrusive." - Denise Chastain

Denise, what will your approach be when photographing my wedding day?

I say this with much conviction, “I am a wedding photojournalist.”  I am always present and NEVER intrusive.

I photograph your wedding day with an honest, candid and NATURAL approach. I want who you are to shine through. I will document your wedding without interfering with the events of the day. “How does this benefit me, you may be thinking?” I believe every second of your wedding day is precious. Your wedding day goes by so fast. I want you to SAVOR every moment and and not be aware of the camera. I do not want to be a distraction.

That being said, my nature is to be proactive. I am constantly trying to anticipate what will happen next. In any situation I am ready to go beyond the call of duty. I have quite the emergency kit I bring to every wedding as well as my passion, optimism and sense of humor!

Here are some of my images that have been honored by The Wedding Photojournalist Association

This was from a wedding I photographed at Battery Gardens in lower Manhattan. The guys wanted Tower One in their photo.

You spend a lot of time with your wedding photographer. It’s important that our personalities connect. Even before you are my client, I am here to help you. When a potential client reaches out to me the first thing we do is create a first draft wedding day schedule.  That conversation is the first in many steps that help us to get to know each other and build trust.

With over 20 years’ experience shooting weddings, I often provide many vendor referrals to clients and potential clients alike. Any insight I can impart to you, I will.  If you have a wedding planner, that’s great. I’m not here to step on any toes, but if you need anything I am your ally.

Since your focus is photographing the wedding in a candid and natural way, do you still take some family group shots and portraits of the couple?

Yes! This is done at your request. Meaning we figure out what groupings you would like before the wedding day. We should know how much time we need in order to satisfy your requests.

I built small wooden benches for this wedding and brought antique folding chairs. When you have many people in the shot it helps to have tools to keep the shot neat and organized. I also brought sand colored fabric for the ladies to sit on.

All group photos and couple portraits should be completed before the reception starts, (if possible.)  That being said, always feel free to reach out to me during the night to grab any photos you may like with anyone you wish.

I want you to be able to enjoy your cocktail hour and wedding reception. Remember, I’m in the business of you enjoying your wedding day!

How long will it take for us to receive our wedding photographs?

Your online gallery will be available three weeks after your wedding day. You will be able to download all of your wedding images from this gallery.  “Sneak Peeks” after the wedding!

You can have the images printed at your printer of choice and post them anywhere you like. I have labs I can recommend to you as well. If interested, please inquire about wedding albums, prints and other fine art options I offer.

Do you photograph engagement shoots?

Yes! I am so thrilled anytime I get to do an engagement shoot with my clients. I can include a complimentary engagement session, (Monday-Thursdays), with any wedding coverage. The opportunity to spend some quality time with you and create new memories is always welcomed.

We live in an area with so many great location possibilities.  Close access to New York City, Beaches, Ruins, Nature Preserves and Formal Gardens provide ample opportunities for great photographs. Try to incorporate things you enjoy doing together into your engagement session. Engagement images will be delivered in two weeks via an online gallery.

Do you have insurance?

Yes, I do. I am fully insured. Please let me know if your venue needs a certificate of insurance.

Denise, what do weddings mean to you?

Weddings are milestone events that all cultures from around the world share. It is a day filled with unprecedented joy and tears from hearts that are ready to burst with all the emotions we have no words for.

In addition to celebrating two lives coming together, weddings are also family reunions. It’s a rare time in anyone’s life when you have all the people from various parts of your life come together for one day.

"We do not enjoy being photographed. How do you handle this as a wedding photographer?"

You are not alone. Most people do not enjoy having their photo taken and I am one of them. I always joke, “The camera can be mean, I get it to behave.” One question you have to ask yourself is, “When was the last time I was photographed by a photographer whose work I love.” This is another reason why it’s a wise idea to take advantage of the engagement shoot. You have a chance to work with your wedding photographer before the wedding day. The second benefit is, you have the opportunity to see a multitude of images of yourself. Seeing so many images of yourself is often the most overwhelming part of viewing your wedding images. Unless you are a model, actor,  or prolific selfie taker you are not accustom to seeing so many images of yourself.

How can we get our wedding published?

Editors at the various wedding magazines and blogs need new and inspiring content for their readers. The things they care about are the decor, wardrobe, the cake, wedding stationary, flowers and any details that visually captivates the editor. Trend Alert: Incorporating cultural details and traditions are hot right now.

Should we see each other before the ceremony?

This is a deeply personal decision between the two of you. The reason why most couples have a “Revel” or a “First Look” is they want to get any portraits and groups photographs completed before the cocktail hour.  I once had a client tell me their first look was one of their favorite parts of the wedding. It’s like they had an extra special moment added to the day. If you do choose to see each other before the ceremony, you will have to be camera ready earlier.

What do we do if it rains or we have a storm of some sort on our wedding day?

What if it’s 100 degrees on our wedding day?

I’m incredibly resourceful. My joke is, “You can blindfold me and drop me off in a cave in Afghanistan, as long as I have my gear, I can deliver you wonderful wedding images.” That being said, you may consider this concern when you select your venue. It would be wise to select a venue that you feel is photogenic inside as well as outside. It’s good to have this conversation with the venue manager when considering ceremony and reception options. I am always here to help as well with venue referrals.

What makes you different?

  • I make empathizing with others a priority.
  • I enjoy being pro-actively friendly and (being proactive in general.)
  • I delight in providing small acts of kindness

Life Philosophy

  • Have a sense of humor. Life would be unbearable without one. I try to find humor in everything. It’s a muscle I enjoy working on and exercising.
  • As my Mom always say and yours may too, “When there is a will there’s a way.” I feel this lifelong point of view mixed with encouragement has made me a ferocious problem solver. My husband says I’m a cross between MacGyver and a girl scout.
  • Be an active listener. People need to be heard.
